The day before yesterday we drove up to Monterey, mostly on Hwy 101 due to the landslide on Hwy 1 and apparently Tuesday is the day to be in Monterey!
First, we walked down Fisherman's Wharf where Chandler filled up on samples of probably 10 different clam chowders and we watched 10s of seals play in the water hoping to snag scraps from the fishermen. Then we discovered their Farmer's Market!! They have a great market every Tuesday down on Alvadaro Street with lots and lots of local produce. We scored a 10 lb bag of the best juiciest oranges you've ever tasted, 3 baskets of strawberries, and a bag of dried aprocots and dried pears. We also discovered the Indian Naan Wraps- Naan filled like a burrito with spicy mixed veggies and rice. Yummy!!!
After bumming around downtown and relaxing at a Hostel here, we decided to venture down to Cannery Row. There we made it to a mexican joint that had $.99 tacos (made on freshly prepared corn tortillas right in front of you!) and $3 margaritas! We indulged on $15!!
We spent the night camping in the back of the truck and the following morning went to find some java. When we walked in we saw our friend Donald from Big Sur! It seemed such a small world. Donald has biked 7,000 miles over the past 7 months, crossing country once and biking from Mexico to Canada once. Since he accomplished the southern route across the U.S. he is hoping to take the northern route in the following weeks before he goes back to work. So we had our coffee with a friend.
Drawing inspiration from Donald and needing exercise, Chandler and I embarked on the "17 Mile Drive" with our bikes. The drive offers fantastic views of the ocean and of the infamous Pebble Beach Golf Course where the U.S. Open is held. Chandler, having been a golf enthusiast for many years, and our fathers being big into golf, my dad having played the course before, gave us reason to enjoy the the drive even more.
It wasn't easy, but we had a lot of fun :)
