Day 30-31: San Marcos, Tx

Good Morning! I just watched the sunrise from our hotel window (hotel courtesy Betsay :) )and I am ready to catch everyone up on the past couple of days. After leaving Blanco we drove about 25 miles west to a town called San Marcos. San Marcos is home to Texas State University and is a pretty cool little college town. The town is situated on the San Marcos River- a short stretch of river beginning at an aquaifer and later connecting to the larger Guadalupe River. The college incorporated much of the river and springs into their campus, therefore there are many beautiful water features throughout town. Since the water is so pure coming from the aquaifer, it is all crystal clear and also naturally regulated between 72-78 degrees year round.
The first thing we did was check out the Texas State University Aquarena. The place was amazing! It was Texas' first theme park, opened in the early 1920s and operating until 1996. It was originally comprised of a chair lift like sky ride, a submarine theater where you would watch women dressed like mermaids swim around, and the now famous glass bottom boats! All of these attractions have been shut down (but interestingly still remain intact) except for the glass bottom boats- which we took a tour on!

The rest of our time there we used to explore the trails along the river. We did find some yummy food at the Root Cellar
and at Zen's Pizza- although the service wasn't remarkable.
We camped out in the stadium parking lot on the TSU campus. I wasn't totally stoked to be doing that, but it meant that we would be able to wake up and run along the springs as opposed to driving 20 miles to the closest campground or paying for a hotel.
I hope you enjoy the slide show Chandler put up! We will be posting more soon :)
