Day 42: Train Ride to Albuquerque

March 18th 2011
Chandler and I packed our things up at the Holiday Inn in Albuquerque and took the advice of our cab driver by taking the train from there to Santa Fe. It was a nice three level train that road through beautiful countryside and through Indian reservations and dropped us off right in the heart of Santa Fe.

We spent the day walking around, looking through galleries and shops. There are so many fair trade shops and stores with goods from all over the globe. Also, I was overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality shown by the locals. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in who we were and what we are up to. It was refreshing :)
We grabbed lunch at Louie's Diner and had a wonderful server who shared with us her stories from her time living in Portland and in the Northwest. She was excited for us and hoped she could move back soon herself. My absolute FAVORITE part of the day was our happening upon a little place called Kakawa Chocolate House
. They specialize in house made truffles, chocolates, and elixirs. Chandler and I ate the Sea Salt Caramels and the Caramel Turtle. Honestly, it was the BEST chocolate and carmels I have ever eaten. You can order them online too, which we will have to do :)

We took the 5 p.m. train back to Albuquerque and decided we would have to drive back up to Santa Fe to spend Albuquerque, Chandler decided to take me on an impromptu date up to Sandia Peak by way of the tramway. It was lovely :) We caught the last 8 p.m. tram up to the top. The weather changed dramatically and we had amazing views of the city lights below. The mountain seemed more intimidating in the dark. The moon lit the mountain well enough for us to see it's cliffs. After arriving at the peak, we got a drink at the High Finance Restaurant that overlooked the city below and connected to the start of the ski slopes. There was snow at the top and the temperature was in the 30s! They say that the climate and terrain from the base to the peak is the equivalent of traveling from Mexico to Alaska, in a period of about 15 minutes!

After a sweet and romantic evening ;) Chandler and I drove to Cochiti Lake to camp out in the truck, about 18 miles outside of Santa Fe.
