After leaving the caverns, Chandler and I drove up to Cloudcroft to camp out for the night. The change in weather and scenery was pretty drastic. We went from the sunny deserts of the southeast corner of New Mexico to the chilly, snowy, evergreen covered terrain of the Sacramento Mountains. The temperature difference went from the mid-eighties of the Guadalupe Mountains to below freezing and we were over 8,600 ft in elevation. On our drive we saw tons of deer and elk!! I have never seen elk out like that before, so it was pretty exciting. After a lot of driving we settled down in the Lincoln National Forest for the night.
The following morning we headed to Alamagordo to get our coffee and Chai Latte fix at the Olive Brach Coffee Shop and I did some updating on the blog. There, we made plans to head to White Sands National Monument for the afternoon and then drive as much of the way to Albuquerque as we could before nightfall.
White Sands was a blast! It really amazing to see all the beautiful white gypsum crystals in the middle of New Mexico with the mountains surrounding you. We chilled there for a couple hours enjoying the dry heat and ran up and down the dunes.
